You should, therefore, faithfully bring them to the services of God's house, and teach them the Lord's Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments. As they grow in years, you should place in their hands the Holy Scriptures, and provide for their instruction in the Christian faith, that, living in the covenant of their baptism and in communion with the Church, they may lead godly lives until the day of Jesus Christ. Do you promise to fulfill these obligations? Many of us have made these promises. At baptism, we declare our belief that God has entrusted these children to our care, and that we intend to pass on to them the faith that has touched our lives. For some 400 years now, the Lutheran Church has used the early years of adolescence as a time to help parents do just that. Our tradition of Catechism (a Greek word for "teaching") offers young people a chance to study the faith, search the Scriptures, and discover what it means to be a follower of Jesus. It is our hope that during these years, they can grow in their relationship with God, and develop patterns of regular participation in Christian community - patterns that will serve them well for the rest of their lives. Involvement in a catechetical program isn't easy. If it is to make a difference in people's lives, it demands a significant commitment. At Saint Peter, leaders, students, and parents work together to make this a meaningful experience - one that is worthy of the commitment we ask students to make to it. Through the years, we have discovered that participants (students and leaders alike) tend to get out of the program as much as they are willing to put into it. Completion of Saint Peter's catechetical program takes approximately three years (typically during the sixth, seventh and eighth grades). Each year's program has four program components. They include: We believe that Saint Peter's Catechism Program offers a rich opportunity for parents who desire to fulfill the promises they made to God at their children's baptism. It is also a chance for the whole congregation to share with these students a living and lasting faith. Please keep the participants in this year's Catechism Program in your prayers. They began the year's journey on September 26, 2004 and will finish up the first part of May, 2005. Interested 6th, 7th and 8th Graders - or their parents - are invited to contact Pastor Dave for further information. Three Year Schedule of Emphasis2008-2009

Full participation at workshops, servant events, fellowship opportunities, and completion of core requirements is expected of every student. The Registration Form includes a chance for both student and parent to commit themselves to this ministry. download document Medical Consent form From time to time our Catechism groups travel by automobile to servant events, to overnight camps and occasionally to each other's homes. Saint Peter's policy is that before doing so, every participant must have a Medical Release form on file in the office. download document Sunday Worship Reflection Sheet It's not the favorite component of Catechism for most students, but Sunday Morning Review Sheets provide the opportunity to reflect on the message of a given Sunday morning, and let the Pastor know what you are thinking and understanding about worship. When traveling out-of-town find a place to worship with God's people, download this form, complete it and attach a bulletin to it before submitting it. download document Faith Statement Assignment (for final-year students) At the end of their catechetical studies, all students are asked to compose three short essays about their faith. These essays are an attempt to share with the pastor and the congregation some glimpses of their relationship with God, and their expectations of being adult members of the church. The essays are based on questions included in this form. download document Home > Growing > Catechism (Modified: Monday November 10, 2008 at 05:00) |
