SAINT PETER MUSIC MINISTER ATTENDS ALCM CONFERENCE
Saint Peter Minister of Music Beryl Fanslow Wilson traveled to Philadelphia for the 18th biennial ALCM (Association of Lutheran Church Musicians) Conference from July 4-8. The theme was “What Wondrous Love: Living in Harmony.” She shared her story:
First time in Philly?
Yes!
What classes did you take?
I took “African American Spirituals and Music of Black Composers,” “Band-Led Song Repertoire,” “Handbell Techniques,” and “Improvisation: Using Different Musical Styles in Today’s Hymnody.” My favorite was the improvisation class. It gave me ideas on how to enliven our traditional hymns and to get me, the band, and the congregation to engage in hymns differently.
What did you enjoy the most?
The opening lecture by Mark A. Miller was incredibly inspiring. He talked about creating a welcoming and inclusive community for everyone through music. It was a great reminder how music can break down barriers and create community.
Another highlight was a concert by Choral Arts Philadelphia, a professional choral ensemble in Philadelphia. They premiered newly-discovered oratorio of early Baroque composer Giacomo Carissimi. The choir was made up of 8 singers, and the soprano soloist was phenomenal!
Can you describe the atmosphere of the event?
Everything felt welcoming and supportive. So many of the people have known each other for 20+ years, so it felt like a giant reunion, even to a newbie like me! Everyone was there to learn from everyone else and excited to celebrate each other’s accomplishments.
How will this experience help your ministry at Saint Peter?
Having extra resources and being able to talk to people who have the same experiences as me is so helpful in problem solving and in creating a flourishing music ministry. I met two music ministers from Colorado Lutheran churches. We enjoyed cocktails, meals, sharing ideas, and running up the Rocky Stairs! We’ve already made plans to collaborate in Colorado. I have new ideas for how to present music in worship, what music to perform, and how to engage the community through the Music Ministry.
